Spirit in the Arts has an over-sized art studio area in a downstairs social hall that is completely accessible and can accommodate larger groups, and two well equipped studio art rooms upstairs accessible only by stairs. The walls are lined with a wide variety of art materials, 90% of which are donated by individuals like you. Check out the list of items we always need! We keep the materials accessible and clearly labeled so artists can be free to choose what they want. Come try different art mediums - there is so much to choose from and so many possibilities! We have:
> Glass gems, rocks and tiles for decorating and designing. > Stacks of fabric, ribbon, trim, lace and thread for sewing and gluing, plus sewing machines for general use. > An entire bookcase dedicated to beading and jewelry.
> Tissue, yarn, leather, string, wire, wool and magazines. > Boxes and boxes of 'things' like wood pieces, tiny toys, plastic flowers, glass pieces and doll parts, just to name a few of these 'treasures' that can be put together into amazing found - object art pieces. > Paints, markers, crayons, watercolors, fabric paints, charcoal, pastels and other two-dimensional materials. Our work spaces are designed to bring people together to create in community. On any given day you might be creating next to a family with young children, seniors and youth or physically challenged adults. We encourage dialogue between artists, introducing everyone and sharing supportive comments on work being produced. Frequently our artists share their stories with each other, bringing these participants from various ethnic, financial and experiential groups together in ways that might not normally happen. Sometimes it is quiet in the studio rooms, with people silently working side by side while the soft classical music plays in the background, and other times the rooms hum with laughter and talk.
Need a break from your creative efforts? The nearby kitchen is stocked with snacks and drinks that are free to all. We receive snack donations from Senior Gleaners. You can also bring your own food. We have quite a few artists who get off work and bring their lunches to consume before starting their art projects. We also partner with Senior Gleaners to provide bags of food to anyone who regularly participates or volunteers in our programs. For many, these weekly food donations are a welcome and necessary addition to their over-stretched food budgets.
Our small upstairs art gallery, with its welcoming chairs, poetry & prose books and beautiful art, is usually open for you to sit and enjoy a quieter space. We also have a quiet art room upstairs, where artists can create in silence, away from the busier rooms.
The best way to experience Spirit in the Arts (besides coming to visit!) is to see images of are artists and creations. For more photos of our studio, please see our Photo Gallery Page
